MALC in a small gathering celebrated Founders’ Day on March 11, 2019, in the OPD area. Founders’ Day is celebrated every year to honour all founder members of Marie Adelaide Leprosy Centre (MALC) who played a pivotal role in laying the foundation and bringing MALC to its glorious days. It is an honour that MALC’s founder members were all women namely Sr. Berenice Vargas (1956), Mother Doyle (1956), Dr. Ruth Pfau (1960), Dr. Zarina Fazelbhoy(1962), Sr. Jeannine Geuns (1962) and Dr. Grace Warren (1964). Their tireless efforts are reminisced on this very special day. MALC is fortunate to have one of the founder members: Sr. Jeannine Geuns, present amongst them. She was also the Chief Guest for the occasion.
This year, Sr. Jeannine also turned 80 years old and MALC celebrated her birthday with a cake cutting ceremony.
Sr. Jeannine was not only the first matron of MALC Hospital, Karachi, but also established the Manghopir project with other Daughters of the Heart of Mary (DHM) sisters. It was due to the enormous support of her family members, she was able to rehabilitate numerous lives and also ran a housing scheme for the underprivileged. She introduced creative fundraising ideas for the marginalized and participated enthusiastically. Her efforts will always be cherished.
