World Leprosy Day 2019
World Leprosy Day (WLD) is observed every year on the last Sunday of January. This year’s theme of World Leprosy Day was ‘Ending Stigma, Discrimination & Prejudice’. Marie Adelaide Leprosy Centre (MALC) celebrated WLD on January 28, 2019, at the Karachi Marriott Hotel, honouring 32 longstanding partners of MALC in Pakistan. The Chief Guest for the evening was Dr. Muhammad Usman Chachar, Additional Chief Secretary, Health Department – Government of Sindh. His Eminence Joseph Cardinal Coutts – Archbishop of Karachi, His Excellency Eugen Wollfarth – Consul General of Germany and Ms. Claudia Villani – Benefactor from Austria, were among the Guests of Honour.
MALC was highly honoured by the presence of Syed Qasim Naveed Qamar – Special Assistant to the CM Sindh on Department of Persons with Disabilities, who enlightened the occasion by sharing a few words and assured the Government of Sindh’s support to MALC in its Leprosy Control Programme. In his speech he stressed the need to create public awareness to minimize the burden of the ailment as Leprosy is controlled but not yet eliminated. The Chief Guest, Guests of honour, and Mr. Mervyn Lobo – CEO MALC also spoke on the occasion reminiscing Dr. Pfau’s selfless services to the marginalized people of Pakistan especially people affected with Leprosy. Dr. Pfau’s mission is carried forward with the kind support of MALC’s donors, partners, volunteers and well-wishers.
Every year on the occasion of WLD, MALC honours employees for their tireless and longstanding services to the organization. Mr. Savio Martin Pereira, Director HR & Administration came forward to announce the names of those employees completing 25 years of service namely Mr. Harrision Rehmat – Supervisor Laboratory, Mr. Muhammad Ismail – Supervisor Eye Department and Dr. Mansour Ahmed Ansari – Incharge Hospital. This year was different for MALC, as there was an employee completing 50 years of service: Mr. Pir Ali Shah, House Keeping Incharge.
The entire event was sponsored by Jubilee Life Insurance (main sponsor) along with ABL Asset Management (co-sponsor) UBL Funds Al-Ameen Funds (co-sponsor), for which MALC is extremely grateful. Without the presence of the awardees and distinguished guests which also included MALC’s present and former Board Members, this event would not have been a success. MALC expresses its sincere appreciation to them for taking out time from their busy schedules and gracing the occasion with their presence.
